In celebration of the month of Francophony, the Consulate General of Canada in Guangzhou and several partners organized a literary event with the famous author, intellectual and screenwriter, Dany Laferrière. More than 40 people attended the event on Saturday evening at the Fang Suo Bookstore.  A research fellow of the Center for Canadian Studies, Geoffrey McCormack attended event.  

Mr. Laferrière has written 30 books during his career, mainly in French, and he already has three novels translated into Chinese. The most recent one is entitled Journal of a Writer in Pajamas.

 He received the 2009 Médicis Award for his novel The Enigma of the Return. In 2006, he also received the Governor General’s Literary Award in the French-Youth Literature category for his novel Je suis fou de Vava. In 2013, he was elected to the French Academy, where he was officially inducted on May 28, 2015. He is the second member without French nationality to be admitted to this famous institution founded in 1635. He sits in the same chair as that occupied by Montesquieu in 1728.

 

 

 

Dany Laferrière was born in 1953 in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. When he was four years old, his father went into exile in Quebec to escape the reprisals of François Duvalier’s regime. He spent his childhood in Petit-Goâve with his grandmother Da, one of the outstanding characters of his literary works. After his studies, he became a columnist for the weekly Le Petit Samedi Soir and Radio Haiti-Inter. In 1976, his friend was murdered by Tontons Macoute. In fear of being next on the list, he left the country and moved to Montreal. In 1985, at the age of 32, he published his first novel called How to Make Love with a Negro without Getting Tired. This novel was very successful not only in Quebec’s literary scene, but also in the English-speaking world. Since then, Dany Laferrière continues to write.

 

 

The questions asked of the author during the evening were general:

• Why write?

He feels an exceptional pleasure when he writes. A new world appears before him. This world is changing little by little. We do not know the end yet, but we participate in its development. He writes in order to express himself and to escape into this imaginary universe.

• How does the genesis of a book occur?

Ideas trickle into his mind, increasing in intensity until, like a deluge, they overflow the banks of the river. When he starts writing, he cannot stop. He wants to describe this feeling. He builds a universe that is sometimes inspired by lived events, known people, such as his first love, his grandmother, his exile in Quebec and much more.

 

 

• Have you ever experienced writer’s block?

The author has never suffered from the fear of writing. He says he does not necessarily want to write. He writes when he has ideas, but without pushing the process. He is patient because writing a novel can take a long time.

• Why read?

He met his best friends in the bookstores. A book for him is a trace of happiness. People read because sometimes their life is not enough for them. For the author, to read is pure happiness. First, he loves silence. He finds that there is too much noise pollution in the world today. People talk too much and listen too little. Reading a book is like speaking with the dead, appreciating their knowledge and viewing the world as they once saw it.

• Who are your favorite authors?

During the evening, Mr. Laferrière quoted the following authors: Borges, Miller, Rembault, J. D. Salinger, Virginia Wolf, Dostoevsky, and D. H. Lawrence.

The event on Saturday night was a great success. An interpreter offered translated for the audience from French into Chinese and from Chinese into French. People in the room seem to have enjoyed the discussion with the author and the questions they had were engaged and evoked interesting, heartfelt, and sometimes comical responses by the author. At the end of the evening, Mr. Laferrière offered to autograph books.

 

 

Célébrer le mois de la francophonie avec l’auteur Dany Laferrière

Dans le cadre du mois de la francophonie, le Consulat général du Canada à Guangzhou ainsi que plusieurs partenaires ont organisé un événement littéraire avec le célèbre auteur, intellectuelle et scénariste, Dany Laferrière. Monsieur Laferrière a reçu le prix Médicis 2009 pour son roman L'Énigme du retour.  En 2006, il a également reçu le Prix du Gouverneur dans la catégorie Littérature jeunesse de langue française, pour son album jeunesse Je suis fou de Vava. En 2013 il fut élu à l'Académie française, où il est officiellement reçu le 28 mai 2015. Il est le deuxième membre sans nationalité française à être admis dans cette célèbre institution fondée en 1635.Il siège dans le second fauteuil, le même qu’occupait Montesquieu en 1728.

Ce roman fut un vrai succès non seulement sur la scène québécoise, mais également dans le monde anglophone. Depuis ce temps jusqu’à ce jour Dany Laferrière continue d’écrire.

Les questions posées à l’auteur lors de la soirée furent d’ordre général.

· Pourquoi écrire?

Il ressent un plaisir exceptionnel lorsqu’il écrit. Un nouveau monde apparait devant lui. Ce monde ne cesse d’évoluer petit à petit. On n’en connaît pas encore la fin, mais on participe à son développement. Il écrit afin de s'exprimer et afin de s'évader dans cet univers imaginaire.

 

· Comment se passe la genèse d’un livre?

Il y a une idée qui trotter dans sa tête et puis cela fini par déborder tel un fleuve. Lorsqu’il commence à écrire, il ne peut s’arrêter. Il veut décrire cette envie. Il construit un univers qui s’inspire parfois d’événements vécus, de personnes connues telles que son premier amour, sa grand-mère, son exil au Québec et bien plus.

· Le vertige de la page blanche?

L’auteur n’a jamais souffert de la peur d’écrire. Il dit qu’il ne cherche pas nécessairement à écrire. Il écrit lorsqu’il a des idées, mais sans bousculer le processus. Il est patient, car écrire un roman peut prendre beaucoup de temps.

· Pourquoi lire?

Il a rencontré ses meilleurs amis dans les librairies. Un livre pour lui est une trace de bonheur. Les gens lisent, car parfois leur vie ne leur suffit pas. Pour l’auteur lire est un pur bonheur. Tout d’abord, il adore le silence. Il trouve qu’il y a trop de pollution sonore dans le monde actuel. Les gens parlent trop et sans écouter. Ensuite, lire un livre s’est parlé avec les morts. Apprécier leur savoir et leurs regards sur le monde de l’époque.

· Quels sont sesauteurs préférés ?

Lors de cette soirée, Monsieur Laferrière a cité les auteurs suivants; Borges, Miller, Rembault, J. D. Salinger, Virginia Wolf, Dostoïevski et D. H. Lawrence.

L’événement de samedi soir dernier fut un grand succès. Il y avait un interprète qui offrait un service de traduction en chinois et en français. Les gens dans la salle semblent avoir aimé la discussion avec l’auteur. Ils ont également eu l’occasion de poser des questions et de recevoir l’autographe de Monsieur Laferrière.
