2020年10月27日

On October 13, the Center for Canadian Studies at GDUFS invited Professor Qian Hao to deliver a lecture entitled “Theories and Practices: The 50th Anniversary of the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations Between China and Canada". Professor Qian works at the School of International Relations and Public Affairs at the Shanghai International Studies University (SISU). She is the director of the Center for Canadian Studies at SISU, a doctoral supervisor in International Relations, and President of the Association for Canadian Studies in China. to deliver a lecture The lecture was presided over by Professor Tang Xiaosong of CCS at GDUFS. All researchers and graduate students of the Center attended the lecture.

Focusing on the history, current situation, and prospects for China-Canada relations, Professor Qian Hao analyzed deeply Canada's position in China’s diplomacy as well as three mainstream theories regarding Canada’s diplomacy. She also reviewed the history of economic, political, military, and cultural exchanges between China and Canada. She pointed out that diplomacy is the continuation of domestic politics. To study Canada, we should first know about its domestic politics.

At the lecture, Professor Qian Hao discussed the "rupture of China-Canada relations" with the Center’s researchers. She believed that the rupture of China-Canada relations originated from "changes" of the two countries since the establishment of diplomatic relations--Canada increasingly considering itself as a principal power under the theory of "compound new realism", and the transformation of China's diplomacy from a strategy of defense to a strategy of initiative since the Beijing Olympic Games.

In the end, Dr. Qian summarized that to break the deadlock in China-Canada relations, we need to use "windows" of cooperation. At the same time, think tanks need to create areas for cooperation.
