On April 24th,2019,Dr. Yang,an assistant professor at Yonsei University in South Korea, visited CCS to deliver a lecture on Sino-American Relations: Paradigmatic Changes amidst an Uncertain Future. The lecture was hosted by Professor Tang Xiaosong, the CCS Director. All the CCS staff and students attended the event.
Dr. Yang pointed out that the United States has been interpreting Sino-U.S. relations and formulating corresponding policies towards China with the “engagement” paradigm, while the current “engagement” thinking of the United States has met demise. The US Republican Party and the Democratic Party, which have always held opposing political stances, have reached an agreement on abandoning the “engagement” policy towards China. In further formulating America’s Asia/China strategy, there is controversy between the two parties and in academic circles.
Regarding the theoretical support of the US “engagement” policy toward China, Dr. Yang believes that socialization and transnationalism can provide certain perspectives. As the US attitude towards China has shifted from “engagement” to “toughness”, Dr. Yang argues that Sino-American relations are “not optimistic”.
