On March 16th, 2018, Professor Hu Jian, editor-in-cheif of the Journal of Social Sciences, visited CCS to deliver a lecture on The Relationship between Academic Research and Think Tanks. The lecture was hosted by Professor Tang Xiaosong, the CCS Director. All the CCS staff and students attended the event.
Professor Hu Jian first explored how the development of a think tank can promote the development of philosophy and social sciences, and pointed out that the mistaken understanding of the think tanks and their practice will seriously harm the study of philosophy and social sciences. According to Professor Hu Jian’s analysis, the relationship between academic research and think tanks is the relationship between root and leaf.
Finally, Professor Hu Jian gave a few suggestions on how to build a new social think tank with Chinese characteristics: first, we should pay attention to the importance of basic theory research; Secondly, the research theory should get down to earth; Thirdly, think tanks should have the insight of strategy; The think tanks sell ideas rather than provide a way to solve specific problems.
