2015年06月05日

Abstract

The Annual Report on the Development of Canada (2014) , which comes as the first blue book in China dedicated to an in-depth analysis of Canada’s national conditions, is designed and hosted by Prof. Zhong Weihe, president of Guangdong University of Foreign Studies and Prof.Tang Xiaosong, Director of the Center for Canadian Studies at GDUFS.  The Editorial Board members who took part in writing the book are experts from Guangdong University of Foreign Studies , Endicott College in the U.S., the University of Macau, and the Shanghai University of Finance and Economics.

Today , China has become Canada’s largest source of overseas investment , second largest trading partnerand source of imports , and third largest export market.  In turn , Canadaranks as China’s thirteenth largest trading partner. Therefore, gaining deeper understanding and launching in-depth research into Canada’s national conditions have become an urgent and practical need for the Chinese government ,enterprises , and academia.  With respect to external relations, Canadaput economic diplomacy first by strengthening its traditional trading partnership with the United States and Europe while at the same time continuously exploring the emerging markets in Asia and Latin-America. Despite its intimate economic and political relationships with the United States and Europe, Canada sees the Sino-Canadian relationship as an important bilateral relation and upholds relatively independent foreign policy with China. However, for the purpose of seeking Western interests, some developedcountries, especially the United States and leading powers in Europe, sabotaged the Sino-Canadian relationship by introducing destructive factors inpolitics, economy, military, culture, and human rights. These accumulated negative factors added to the uncertainty facing the development of Sino-Canadian relations. Therefore, attaching importance to the study of Canada’s national conditions and Sino-Canadian bilateral relation is not only important in seeking China’s national interest, but also helpful inpromoting the healthy and benign development of Sino-Canadian bilateral relations.

This book, which iscomposed of five parts, launched an in-depth analysis of the hot issues in the political situation, diplomatic affairs, economic management, socialsecurity, environmental governance, and cultural education in Canada with an emphasis on the studies of Canadian diplomacy and the Sino-Canadian bilateralre lationship. Its innovation lies not only in the creative theoretical research and policy research it applies, but also in the breakthrough it makes in the research field and research methodology. The book is of important significance in enriching domestic theoretical research, policyanalysis, and strategic evaluation in the field of Canadian studies. Moreover, it can also be utilized as a tool to provide reference for governments, enterprises, and all sectors of society.
